Books have always been my first love. Ever since I was a child reading has been my favorite past time. The public library has been my favorite place and not much has changed since then. Nancy Drew is still my #1, the Great Gatsby makes my heart ache, and I'm always going to have a soft spot for Holden Caulfield no matter where I'm at in life. I don't spend as much time getting lost in books as I'd like, but I am always reading.
Since my freshman year of college I have been doing a GoodReads challenge to read a certain amount of books a year. I started at my then age 19 and this year I'm all the way up to 23 books a year. Although I tend to read 3-5 books over my challenge give or take a graphic novel or two helps up my reading list, but still!
This year I have really been mixing it up with reading, and listening to e-books on my walks.
So far I've read 10 books. Out of these seven the most thrilling has been Into the Water by Paula Hawkins. Its about a woman named Nel who is obsessed with a place called the drowning pool in her town where many woman have drowned themselves. Suddenly a local is found in the drowning pool. Soon Nel is found in it too. Nel's sister Jules has to return home and take care of Nel's confused, cold, and hurt daughter. The novel follows many of the characters on the journey to uncover the truth about the women of the drowning pool.
I also loved Paris for One and Other Stories by JoJo Moyes, it was the first book I had read by her. About a woman named Nell who plans a trip to Paris for her and her boyfriend, and her boyfriend doesn't show up. She has to decide whether to stay in Paris and find a new version of herself or return back home.
Reading Lauren Graham's Talking As Fast As I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls (And Everything in Between) was so fascinating. Its basically a book about Lauren Graham's career as an actress, wisdom, and lots of Gilmore Girls thrown in. I found myself just soaking up all there was to learn about the WB lot and the famous Star's Hollow. It was good to know that Lauren Graham didn't take any of her time as an actress for granted.
I don't usually read a series during my challenge but a friend of mine recommended the Shopaholic series. They are about a British woman named Becky Bloomwood and her brief career in finance and also her shopaholic tendencies. They are utterly ridiculous and after one book I was ready to call it quits. Not a huge fan of chick lit and the movie is just so much better, I'm sorry! I found the second book to be the best so far, Shopaholic Takes Manhattan.

I also read Lauren Graham's novel Someday Someday Maybe. Its about a young actress named Franny Banks trying to make it as an actress in New York City. At first it was hard to get into but after listening to Lauren Graham's Talking as Fast as I Can and understanding her diction and syntax it was much easier to get into. It was also interesting to listen to Lauren Graham's life and see how her main character in the novel Franny was inspired.
Recently, I finished Grace Kelly Dream Girl. This was one of the best books I've read so far about her early life, career, and life as a member of royalty. I also finished I Love Your Style How to Define and Redefine your Personal Style although I really didn't learn much about my personal style making me feel a little frazzled it was still a fun read.
Currently I am reading Annihilation! Its about a group of women who explore an unknown territory called Area X. I saw the movie in theaters and was fascinated by it! Its very different from the movie but not in a bad way. I actually like both the book and the movie despite their differences. The book is a pretty short read only about 191 pages.
Here's a picture of me cheesing at the cute MIKC cafe in one of my favorite tops. This blouse from Anna Sui for Anthropologie is so pretty. Its 100% silk and I love the print. Its so whimsical! I wear it all the time!

Thanks for sharing your recommendations! I've been trying to read more lately, I feel much better if I can sit and read in bed for a little before going to sleep. It's been hard to keep up with it much this year but I'm wanting to get back to it! :)

DeleteYou got me at Holden! That book is my number one favourite, easily out of all books I've read in my life. I don't know why, but I can relate to him on so many levels, it often feels as if I'm reading about myself! I think you should give Francoise Sagan a go; I will recommend Hello Sadness and Aimez-Vous Brahms? I have a feeling you will really like these; especially the latter one xx

DeleteI'm amazed you've already read 10 books this year - how lovely! I really need to start reading a little more, I've stopped making time for it before going to sleep which is a real shame. Have a fabulous week ahead!

Thanks Gabrielle! I know you can do it! Likewise!
DeleteI love a good reads challenge! I'm on my second one after (somehow!) managing 50 last year! If you like thrillers, I definitely recommend The Girl Before, The Other Woman and all of BA Paris' work! I've got Into The Water on my reading list so I'm glad you enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteMusings & More
Good job Emily! That's incredible. I'll check those out, thanks for the suggestions.
DeleteI've actually not heard of many of these before, with the exception of great gatsby of course! I'm currently reading Les Miserables vol 1 but because it's made up of smaller stories, I must admit it's hard to really get into it and read a lot in one go x

Totally understandable! Some books are so overwhelming! You have to ease into them
DeleteIt is Simone! You should read Big Little Lies!
