20 in 2020 Challenge

April 30, 2020

At the beginning of the year my pal Jess from Stylebook shared a post about a dressing challenge that really caught my eye. The 20 in 2020 dressing challenge. Created by @Dressing_dawn the idea was to build accountability around the idea of owning less and challenging ourselves to limit our purchases to no more than 20 wardrobe/clothing pieces in 2020.
I recently shared a post on my approach to conscious style. PS I want to just thank you guys for the out pour of positive comments and continuing this challenging yet important discussion with me on that post. I had been in my feelings about the discouraging sustainability conversations I kept having IRL. The comments on my post made me feel so empowered and grateful for each and everyone of you reading and contributing. Thank you for being here.

As I said in my Conscious Style post, I'm trying to attain an even more sustainable style and one way to do that is by buying less.  Last year I bought around 36 clothing items. I was pretty content with my purchases as most of the items I will re-wear/reuse for a long time. This year I'm going to participate in the 20 in 2020 dressing challenge (20in2020Dressing).

While this outfit is new to the blog I wear both pieces pretty often. I bought this coat last year when the Target  20 Years Design for All was on clearance. I love the bright pink. Its such a fun play on traditional houndstooth. The coat itself has a unique texture but I get so many compliments on it.

I love a good cashmere sweater. I bought this J. Crew one to go with my pink suit last year, but it was a little too bright. Still, a good fitting cashmere sweater in a fun color is never a bad purchase.

Back to the 20 in 2020 challenge. I've bought a few things thus far (I've returned a lot).

•A yellow J. Crew wrap dress I have been wanting for 3 years, 70% off, and in MY SIZE! That was a good buy.
•Soludos black leather wedge espadrilles which were on my wishlist!
•A lace blouse from the Anna Sui x I.N.C. collection that was finally in my size for a good price!

At first limiting my purchases sounded scary. I'll admit I was nervous, but the process has been fairly easy! While I'm already a pretty vigilant shopper I've become even more so due to this challenge. I really consider the longevity of pieces now and can really see the gaps in my closet. I've also fixed (or asked my mother to) fix pieces that don't fit quite right or need some TLC.
Additionally, creating a wish list has also helped me understand what might be good for my closet in the long run. Ultimately I'm looking for pieces that are versatile and can be worn for all sorts of occasions. Also, jotting down a pair of jorts that I can wear IRL someday and a new leather jacket while I'm thinking about it. Although with nowhere to go these days this wish list is on the back burner.

I noticed that it's easier for me to buy pieces that I have wanted for a long time that are a good price like the yellow J. Crew dress and Anna Sui x I.N.C. top. So I think I'm going to continue in a similar fashion of buying things that I've wanted for along time versus aimlessly shopping. I feel much more content when I have an item I've wanted for so long and have gotten at an affordable price.

So that's all for now friends. I'm hanging in there obsessing over the Parks & Rec special, watching RHOBH, and taking walks! I will keep you guys updated on my 20in2020dressingchallenge via my style blog posts. What do you guys think? Am I completely crazy?! What questions do you have for me?

  1. That is such a stunning coat on you, what a fun statement piece! it looks so nice with the pink top too :)

I really like the idea of this, but I bought up big in the January sales as my fave store went into administration and I had to quickly spend my gift cards before they were worthless, haha! So I think I've bought quite a lot already, and then I heard about the challenge...ha! I haven't been buying anything fashion related with the home isolation rules though so who knows, maybe I will hit that goal figure this year? :)

Hope you are having a great week :)

  4. You look so stunning dear and this challenge is really a good one! Now that I think about it, I've been doing so basically my whole life, never been someone to buy that many pieces, my limit (what I can afford) is always less than 10 per year! I love how more people are talking about sustainability, and also the fact of us buying less but smart, thinking and getting pieces that we can wear for so many years, and if we don't buy, it's okay we can wear what we have at the moment the main point is to buy less as consumers, and I think that there's no change if we don't change our mindset first! :)

    Have a lovely day!
    XO, Melissa

  7. I don't think you're crazy at all, I think it's a great idea! I think setting a limit like that helps you be more intentional about what you buy, and then you'll only buy what you love! I think keeping to 20 pieces would be hard to do, but I think you'll feel great knowing that those 20 pieces are ones you truly love!
